Welcome!
Why This Course Is Necessary
The purpose of this course is not just to help you get a handle on the basics of nutrition counseling, but to give you the tools you need to use your clinical judgment to provide useful nutrition support to the people who need it most – your patients.
It’s designed to give you exactly what you need to begin getting comfortable at using the basic tenets of motivational interviewing, specifically in a clinical setting. Getting comfortable talking to our clients is one thing. Being able to do that effectively is a whole other animal. Staying curious, open, and supportive are the foundational tools you’ll learn here that will help you get stronger as you’re talking to your patients and doing nutrition counseling.
By the end of the 4 weeks, you will be able to:
- Keep your patients interested and engaged throughout the entire conversation, instead of the blank smile and nod you’re getting now
- Have patients that actually read and save the handouts you give them, instead of shoving them in the bottom of a bag or trashing them the minute you walk out of the room
- Know how to identify your patient’s level of focus and adjust quickly, instead of losing their attention mid-way through the nutrition education session
- Use the time you have available for successful quick conversations, instead of feeling forced into drive-by nutrition educations where you just drop some information and go
The bottom line, big purpose of this course is experience. I want you to walk away knowing that that everything we talk about in the next 4 weeks, you had a chance to put into practice and then come back with questions.
To help make this happen, included in this course are 4 kinds of materials:
- Reading materials and additional references
- Videos to walk you through the written materials
- Quizzes to reinforce what you’ve reviewed
- Workbook with practical practice assignments
- Clinical and patient care handouts to use beyond this course
If you opted into the Bonus Package, you’ll also have additional case studies to reference and some additional motivational interviewing and a ton of MNT resources to use in your clinical work.
For those of you who went for the Total Package, we’ll be meeting regularly to work through these and some new case studies together, and give you a chance to practice using some clinical judgement in real-life situations.
Ok, enough of that…let’s get started!
