The rhythm of the conversation

In motivational interviewing, the rhythm of the conversation is an intentional flow of discussion. It’s designed to help you as the practitioner gently guide your patient to a place of clarity and ownership over their change process.

This is what that rhythm looks like, as a general step by step process:

  1. Ask a question, listen to the answer
  2. Engage again with follow up questions, listen to the answers
  3. Request permission to provide feedback/input/suggestions, provide feedback only as requested
  4. Ask what problem client would like to solve, question they’d like to answer
  5. Set a goal, decided on by your patient
  6. Make a plan, agreed on by your patient

In clinical nutrition, much of how this type of conversation plays out with your patient revolves around your clinical judgment as the dietitian. Though this process focuses on your patient’s interests and readiness, you’ll find many opportunities to shift their attention towards areas of their health that need the most focus.

We will talk in more detail about each of these steps as we move forward. For now, as you talk to your patients, keep this rhythm of the conversation in mind.

Use these steps as an outline in engaging, evoking, focusing and planning out your counseling session and client’s responses.
